What distinguishes Manyoni from some of South Africa’s larger safari destinations is the way visitor numbers are managed. The reserve is privately run and access is limited to guests staying at the lodges inside its boundaries. There are no public day visitors moving through the area, allowing wildlife viewing to take place in a quieter environment with fewer vehicles.
Rhino Sands is one of a small number of lodges operating within the reserve. Five tented suites sit within riverine forest along a seasonal riverbed, spaced far enough apart that each one feels separate from the others.

Most journeys toward Manyoni Private Game Reserve begin on the N2 north from Durban. This is the main highway connecting Durban and the North Coast’s beach towns with the wildlife reserves of Zululand.
Along the coast, the landscape is shaped by humid air and dense vegetation. Dune forests line long stretches of beach and the ocean is rarely far from view.
Inland, the scenery begins to change as the road moves north toward Hluhluwe. Coastal vegetation gradually gives way to open woodland and dry riverbeds cutting through the landscape. The transition is subtle at first, then unmistakable.
The N2 passes through the sugarcane country of KwaZulu-Natal’s North Coast, where wide green fields stretch across rolling hills before giving way to patches of natural bush. By the time the road reaches the turnoff toward Hluhluwe, the surroundings already feel closer to safari country than coastline.
This proximity between coastline and wilderness allows travellers to experience both beach and bush in a single journey, without the long transfers often associated with safari destinations.
