Rhino Sands began, in part, with a toilet. And not a particularly sophisticated one at that.

Years before Rhino Sands took shape, this was simply a family campsite chosen for a birthday weekend in 2014.

The Airtons had planned a trip into this particularly dense part of the Manyoni bush to celebrate Dale’s birthday, with Wyatt still a baby at the time.

The spot itself was already special for a number of reasons. Set within a beautiful stretch of riverine forest and fully surrounded by pristine bush, it felt both protected and deeply connected to the landscape.

As part of the preparations, and perhaps with a degree of foresight, the ladies in the group requested that a bush loo be included in the camp setup. It felt like a reasonable upgrade, given the setting.

Dale obliged, going so far as to install an actual old ceramic toilet in the bush, complete with what can best be described as “inventive plumbing”.

The setup was not elegant or refined, but it served its purpose and added a small, appreciated level of comfort to the camping trip.

The loo remained in place for years afterwards, ready for future visits, and when Rhino Sands was eventually built three years later, it was still there, quietly standing off to one side near what is now the parking area.

From Bush Loo to Eco-Luxury Safari Camp

Today, this once-rustic campsite is something very different and, thankfully, boasts some top-tier bathroom facilities. While the original bush loo is no longer, that origin story still quietly informs what exists here now.
