Rhino Sands was built using canvas and timber structures set on raised decks. The camp’s paths and structures were positioned around existing trees in the riverine forest.

Building Around the Bush
Every tent, deck, and pathway at Rhino Sands was placed with care, guided by the forest itself. We worked around trees, even when it meant walkways bending to accommodate a trunk or our carpenters muttering good-natured complaints. Today those same walkways provide shade for nyala that drift quietly through camp and graze near the tents.

Zululand is blessed with sunshine for most of the year, and we put it to good use. Rhino Sands is off-grid. Electricity is supplied by an on-site solar installation with generator backup, while larger appliances such as stoves and heaters use gas. Here, your safari experience unfolds in step with the natural rhythm of the bush.

Practical Choices in Day-to-Day Operations
Towels are made from locally grown cotton. Each guest receives a stainless-steel water bottle to use in camp and on game drives, reducing the need for disposable bottled-water containers. Camp printing is done on recycled paper.
Meals at Rhino Sands reflect both the seasons and the setting. Menus feature selected local and seasonal produce where available. Our menus change throughout the year, so what is fresh in KwaZulu-Natal is fresh on your plate too.
