Let’s get to know some of the team starting with Chris, the Assistant Manager here at Rhino Sands. Chris – Assistant Manager Meet Lindokuhle Christopher Mthembu, known to most simply as Chris. Originally from Mnqobokazi in Hluhluwe, Chris grew up with a deep appreciation for nature and people. That passion led him into the world of hospitality, where he found the perfect intersection of both, the safari industry. “I’ve always loved the idea of being close to wildlife,” he says. “And I wanted to share that love with guests from around the world.” Chris joined the Rhino Sands family in 2019 and was drawn to our lodge’s intimate size and tight-knit team. “It’s unlike any other place I’ve worked. With fewer tents and a smaller team, everything feels more personal, more connected,” he shares. “It allows us to truly focus on every detail, and make sure each guest feels at home.” A Day in the Life Chris’s day begins before the sunrises – while the forest is still covered in mist and the sounds of the bush are just beginning to stir. Each morning starts with a staff briefing, making sure every department is in sync, from housekeeping and kitchen to guiding and admin. Then comes a walkthrough of the lodge grounds to ensure that everything meets Rhino Sands’ exacting standards: pristine, welcoming, and immersed in nature. His role balances behind-the-scenes logistics with front-of-house warmth. From managing reservations and handling emails to greeting guests by name and assisting with breakfast service, Chris moves seamlessly through his day, always ready with a solution and a smile. “No two days are the same,” he says. “And that’s what I love about it.” The Joys of Lodge Life For Chris, the most fulfilling part of his work is simple: the people. “Meeting guests from different countries and cultures is always special,” he reflects. “You learn something new every day – about the world, about life, and about yourself.” One moment he’ll never forget? “A guest once bought me a watch to say thank you for their stay. It was such a thoughtful gesture and something I’ll always treasure.” Even among the team, laughter and connection are a daily rhythm. “We share jokes, stories – it makes the work environment feel like home.” Why Rhino Sands is Different When asked what sets Rhino Sands apart, Chris doesn’t hesitate. “With just a few tented suites, our guests experience something incredibly personal. He’s already working on mastering new hospitality tools and gaining the skills he’ll need to one day step into a general management role. But for now, he’s exactly where he wants to be – immersed in the rhythm of the bush, surrounded by a team he admires, and welcoming guests into the magic of Rhino Sands.
